The Institutional Review Board (IRB) provides an independent evaluation of research intention with regard to its ethical responsibility.

The central objective of the Field of Focus 4 “Self-Regulation and Regulation: Individuals and Societies” is to understand the human self-regulation processes at the individual and societal levels in the context of interdisciplinary dialogue. The subject fields of the Faculty of Behavioural and Cultural Studies, the Faculty for Economics and Social Sciences and the Law Faculty are chiefly engaged in this activity.

With its its goal to place cultural heritage at the center of research, teaching, and transfer in an innovative form, the Flagship Initiative „Transforming Cultural Heritage“ aims to bring together diverse disciplinary and region-specific competencies in researching and practically dealing with cultural heritage. By this means, it strengthens the link between the university's Fields of Focus III “Cultural Dynamics in Globalised Worlds” and IV "Self-Regulation and Regulation: Individuals and Societies".

The HKMetrics network is a joint initiative of econometricians and statisticians from Heidelberg University, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Mannheim.
